Chandler, Arizona has grown from a small townsite established in in 1912 (the year Arizona became the 48th state), to a prominent suburb of Phoenix, with a population of over 230,000 residents. Originally, the town’s economy was based on agriculture (cotton, corn, and alfalfa), but these days Chandler is home to businesses like Intel, Verizon Wireless, and Microchip Technology.
In addition to its impressive business resume, Chandler is very popular with tourists, and hosts many colorful festivals, including the annual Ostrich Festival, a tribute to the days when ostrich farms in the area catered to the demand for ostrich plumes to adorn ladies’ hats. The city’s Tumbleweed Park is the place to go for many seasonal celebrations, such as the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, and the annual Tumbleweed Christmas Tree (made entirely of tumbleweeds), the only one of its kind in the state! KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit parks and recreation advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., has chosen Chandler as a Playful City USA six years in a row.
Chandler has a number of notable historic buildings, including the McCullough-Price House, and the beautiful Chandler High School, built in 1921. The famous San Marcos Golf Resort opened in 1913, and is the first golf resort established in the state of Arizona, and the first Arizona resort to boast a full complement of resort amenities: golf, tennis, horseback riding, and polo.
